Robert Brown (1926–2022), “Here Come the Brides” star

by Kirk Fox

Robert Brown was an actor best known for playing lumberjack Jason Bolt on the TV series “Here Come the Brides.”

Here Come the Brides

Robert Brown studied acting at the Dramatic Workshop with Lee Strasberg. For a while, he was red listed as a Communist and could not get work. He appeared on Broadway and made his way to Los Angeles. Brown mostly appeared on TV, guest starring on “Bonanza” and “Perry Mason.” In 1967, he guest-starred on the “Star Trek” episode titled “The Alternative Factor.” He was a last-minute replacement for the role after John Drew Barrymore failed to show up on set and was apparently paid more for the episode than star William Shatner but that was kept a secret as Shatner’s contract stated nobody could be paid more than him. He was cast to play Steve McGarrett in the original “Hawaii Five-O” series but was replaced with Jack Lord right before filming by producer Sheldon Leonard. His best-known role was starring as Jason Bolt, one of the three Bolt brothers on the series “Here Come the Brides,” which ran from 1968 until 1970. After, he appeared on “Fantasy Island,” “Archie Bunker’s Place” and “Mannix.

Notable Quote

“But you have to agree not to mention it to anybody. It’s in his contract, nobody can be higher.” “Here’s a five-dollar bill, we’ll pay you five dollars more than Shatner. You do it.” – Brown said in an interview with Paul Casey regarding being a last-minute guest star replacement on a “Star Trek” episode
