Sarah Becker’s legacy
Becker was working as an editor in comic books and magazines when she auditioned to star on the 1996 fifth season of the popular MTV reality series, “The Real World.” She applied as a joke, sending in a videotape in which she made fun of the way cast members were picked for superficial reasons. Her audition tape was a surprise hit with producers, and she traveled from her home of La Jolla, California to Miami, Florida to appear on the show.
Becker embraced her love of skateboarding and roller blading while living in the “Real World” house with her six temporary housemates. Their season was the first in which the stars were expected to complete an assignment: They were given money to launch a startup business. Becker offered suggestions like food delivery, but the group’s business plan ultimately didn’t succeed. During the season, Becker brought home a puppy named Leroy.
After the season ended, Becker returned to California, where she continued working in comic book publishing, including editing “Gen 13.” Later, she became a marriage and family therapist. Though several of her housemates returned for various seasons of “The Challenge,” a “Real World”/”Road Rules” spinoff, Becker did not.
Notable quote
“[B]eing on the show was like going on a bus ride. You get on and go for a ride. And it’s a great time. But when you get off, you have to find your own way home.” — Chicago Tribune, March 1997
