Terry Beasley (1950–2024), record-setting Auburn receiver

by Eric San Juan

Terry Beasley was a record-setting receiver for the Auburn Tigers, a College Football Hall of Fame inductee, and a former San Francisco 49er.

Terry Beasley’s legacy

Beasley is widely considered not just one of the greatest players in Auburn University history, but in college football history overall. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Beasley joined Auburn in 1969 and quickly racked up big numbers, including 34 receptions for 610 yards and six touchdowns. He performed even better his second year, leading the team with 52 receptions, over 1,000 yards, and 11 touchdowns.

In 1971, the year his teammate Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy, Beasley also had Trophy-worthy numbers, hauling in 55 receptions and a dozen touchdowns. He was named College Pass Receiver of the Year. By the time he left Auburn, Beasley had set a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record with 29 receiving touchdowns. He still holds numerous Auburn records, including career receiving yards, most touchdown receptions, most 100-yard games in a season, and others. He was a two-time All-Conference selection and inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Beasley signed with the San Francisco 49ers and played with the team until 1975. However, repeated concussions – he is believed to have sustained at least 19 – cut his career short. He suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and took part in a lawsuit against the NFL along with dozens of other players regarding the issue.
