Thom Christopher’s legacy
Soap opera fans who watched “One Life to Live” between 1990 and 2008 were familiar with Christopher’s character, Carlo Hesser, who became one of the show’s great villains. The character became a favorite on the long-running series and earned Christopher a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 1992.
In fact, for a time, Christopher was juggling two notable soap roles simultaneously. While starring on “One Life to Live,” he was also in the middle of a 67-episode run on the show “Loving” from 1993 to 1994. Despite the workload of being on two shows, he was nominated for Emmys again in 1993 and ‘94, once for each show.
Though Christopher is known among soap fans for playing Hesser (as well as his twin brother, Mortimer Bern), he was better known to science fiction adventure fans of a certain age as Hawk, a half-man, half-bird warrior from the show “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.” Wearing a signature cap that looked like feathers, he made 11 appearances on the popular but short-lived show.
Christopher made his screen debut in 1974 on the crime drama soap “The Edge of Night.” Over the decades, he appeared on dozens of other shows, including “Murder, She Wrote,” “Simon & Simon,” and “Law & Order.” His final screen appearance was in the 2017 film “ADDicted.”
