Tom Sizemore (1961–2023), actor in Saving Private Ryan, Heat

by Linnea Crowther

Tom Sizemore was an actor known for roles in many movies, including “Saving Private Ryan,” “Heat,” and “Natural Born Killers.”

Acting career

Sizemore’s early career featured small roles in such movies as “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Point Break,” as well as a recurring TV role in “China Beach.” His profile rose in the mid-1990s with notable roles in “True Romance,” “Natural Born Killers,” and Heat.” Sizemore had major roles in “Devil in a Blue Dress,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Pearl Harbor,” and “Black Hawk Down,” and he provided the voice of mob boss Sonny Forelli in the video game “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.”

His rising career faltered, however, after his 2003 conviction of domestic violence against his then-girlfriend, Heidi Fleiss. He served time in jail as well as in rehab for his ongoing struggles with substance abuse. Though Sizemore continued to work regularly, the high-profile roles largely ended after his conviction. Later, he was a cast member on “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” and had a recurring role as Anthony Sinclair in the 2017 “Twin Peaks” revival. He also made appearances on TV shows including “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “Lucifer.”

Sizemore on “Natural Born Killers”

“It was a great experience. It was a tough movie to shoot. But movies are fun. I love doing them. Tough doesn’t mean shit to me. Getting older is hard. I don’t look forward to running up and down mountains, but the result is spectacular.” —from a 2013 interview for the AV Club
