Chad Posthumus’ legacy
Posthumus’ road through professional basketball in Canada took him onto courts across the world. A star athlete at River East Collegiate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was considered one of Canada’s top prospects before entering college. The center played for the University of British Columbia and Howard College in Texas, where he was an Academic All-American, then Morehead State, earning All-Ohio Valley Conference honors at the Kentucky university.
He was signed by the Chicago Bulls after graduation and played in the NBA Summer League before jumping to Japan to debut with Levanga Hokkaido. After a season, he played briefly for the Mississauga Power, weeks later signing with Argentina’s Argentino de Junín. That fall, the London Lightning contracted him, beginning Posthumus’ bounce from Canadian teams to Japanese ones before he finally returned to Canada in 2019. There, he played with a half-dozen different teams, including the Saskatchewan Rattlers and Brampton Honey Badgers, then his home city of Winnipeg by way of the Canadian Elite Basketball League’s Winnipeg Sea Bears. Posthumus made his mark on the squad and was named team captain.
He was participating in a training session on November 9 when he suffered a brain aneurysm. There were complications from corrective surgery, from which he did not recover.
