Creating childhood joy
Cummings began working for the toy giants Kenner in 1968, and within a few years, he had created the iconic Baby Alive doll. The doll came with a bottle, a spoon, and diapers, and specially made food packets for her could be mixed with water and “fed” to the doll, moving through the doll to become waste in her diaper. The popular doll was later released with new features including teething and speech. Cummings also patented an innovation to Kenner’s Easy-Bake Oven, perfecting a quick-cooking design using a single incandescent lightbulb. It was introduced in 1978 as the Betty Crocker Easy-Bake Mini-Wave Oven. Cummings remained with Kenner until his retirement in 1995. He also worked with NASA, and he was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served during the Korean War.
