Christopher Ciccone’s legacy

Christopher Ciccone grew up in an Italian household in Michigan alongside five siblings, one of whom became one of the biggest entertainment icons of all time. He attended Western Michigan University and Oakland University, focusing on dance. Those talents drew him to New York, where he used them to assist the surging career of his older sister, the pop star Madonna. He choreographed the video for her debut, 93Everybody,94 danced with her team, created artwork for her 93Like a Prayer94 12-inch single, did art direction on her 1990 93Blonde Ambition94 tour, and was tour director for 199393s 93Girlie Show94 outing.

Ciccone soon transitioned into art and design, establishing a studio and painting his way into SoHo art galleries. He also developed a career in interior design, which was helped along when he designed an apartment for Madonna that landed on the cover of Architectural Digest. In 2012, he extended his work into footwear fashion via the Ciccone Collection.

His 2008 autobiography, 93Life with My Sister Madonna,94 was a New York Times bestseller that for several years fractured the relationship he had with his sister. The pair eventually patched things up. On Instagram, she said of Ciccone: 93He was a painter a poet and a visionary. I admired him. He had impeccable taste. And a sharp tongue, which he sometimes used against me but I always forgave him. We soared the highest heights together and floundered in the lowest lows. Somehow, we always found each other again and we held hands and we kept dancing.94
