Eddie Gossage’s legacy
Nashville, Tennessee-born Eddie Gossage became interested in high-octane competitive sports while watching “Wide World of Sports” as a kid, with a specific interest in promotion. Before launching his career, he even helmed events in his parents’ backyard. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Gossage landed a job as director of public relations at Nashville International Raceway, kickstarting a profession that would last more than three decades.
Over the years, he spent time with Bristol International Raceway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and other companies before being on hand when Speedway Motorsports owner Bruton Smith (1927– 2022) built Texas Motor Speedway. Gossage was put in charge of overseeing the construction. Groundbreaking was in April 1995, and racing debuted in June 1997. Despite some early ups and downs, the course became a landmark in the region. Gossage remained president of the track until his retirement in 2021, bringing NASCAR back to Texas and establishing it as one of motor sport’s major destinations.
Following his retirement from promotion, Gossage became a motivational speaker. Over the years, he won the Promoter of the Year award from the Indy Racing League, the Middle Tennessee State University Distinguished Alumnus Award, and the Advertising Innovation and Marketing Excellence Award from the American Marketing Association and the American Advertising Federation.
