Fred Lewis was the drummer for the funk band Lakeside, known for their 1981 hit “Fantastic Voyage.” 

Fred Lewis’s legacy 

Lewis was a member of Lakeside since the band’s early days in Dayton, Ohio, in the early 1970s. He played congas, timbales, and other percussion. Lakeside had their first hit in 1978 with “It’s All the Way Live” from their album “Shot of Love.” Two years later, they released their biggest album, “Fantastic Voyage.” The title track gained airplay early in 1981 and shot to the top of the R&B chart.” “Fantastic Voyage” crossed over to pop fame as well and was Lakeside’s only song to make the Billboard Hot 100, topping out at No. 55. Later hits included “Your Love Is on the One,” “Outrageous,” and a cover of the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which made it to No. 4 on the R&B chart.
