Gib Guilbeau (1937 - 2016), Cajun musician and songwriter

Gib Guilbeau, the Cajun musician and veteran songwriter from Louisiana, died April 12. He was 78. His death was announced by The Burrito Brothers band via Facebook. No cause of death was immediately available. “Gib was a beautiful guy. Great singer and songwriter,” the group wrote, noting that Guilbeau was a member “of the last of the early wave (1968-75) of Flying Burrito Brothers. … It was an honor to play a couple of times with him. Thoughts and prayers go out to Ronnie and the rest of the Guilbeau family. Thanks, Gib, for the music!”

Guilbeau joined Flying Burrito Brothers about seven years after former Byrds members Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman founded the West Coast country rock band.

Before joining the Flying Burrito Brothers, Guilbeau played in the group Swampwater, Linda Ronstadt92s backing band following the breakup of the Stone Poneys.

Guilbeau also contributed to the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese92s 1972 film, cBoxcar Bertha.9d

Artists who have covered Guilbeau92s songs include Ricky Nelson, Bobby Womack, Rod Stewart, and the fiddler Doug Kershaw, a fellow Cajun singer-songwriter from Louisiana.

He was born Floyd August Guilbeau Sept. 26, 1937, in Sunset, Louisiana, to a musical family. He began playing the fiddle as a young teenager.

His first band,Four Young Men,released a top-five country hit, cYou92re the Reason,9d after singer Bobby Edwards joined the band. The song also reached No. 11 on Billboard92s Hot 100 chart in 1961.
