Musical career

Harmon was a founding member of the Whispers in 1963 in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. The group began scoring hits on the R&B chart in the late 1960s, beginning with “The Time Will Come” in 1969. In 1970, “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong” was a Top Ten R&B hit and crossed over to modest success on mainstream radio. Other early 1970s hits for the Whispers included “Your Love Is So Doggone Good” and “I Only Meant to Wet My Feet.” Harmon left the Whispers in 1973 after an injury to his larynx, and they went on to score bigger hits including “And the Beat Goes On” and “Rock Steady.”
