A life with sports
As a boy, Goldberg served as a batboy for the New York Yankees and became friends with Yankees superstar Joe DiMaggio (1914–1999). He later began working as an assistant to James “Jimmy the Greek” Snyder (1918–1996), ghostwriting his newspaper column and helping with his segments for “The NFL Today.” Goldberg provided radio commentary for the Miami Dolphins before joining WTVJ in Miami as a television commentator. He was hired by ESPN in 1993, contributing to shows including “NFL Countdown” and “ESPN’s Daily Wager.” Goldberg was known for his accuracy in predicting games – and for his habit of banging a gavel on a desk as he argued points on TV, which earned him the nickname “Hammerin’ Hank.”
