Illinois Dust Storm (2023)

1 min read

by

At least seven people have died in a series of car accidents caused by a dust storm in central Illinois on Monday, May 1, 2023. Dozens of others were injured.

The accidents happened along Interstate 55 in Montgomery and Sangamon counties, near the state capitol of Springfield. More than 70 vehicles were involved in crashes. The dust storm, which reduced visibility to zero, was caused by high winds carrying dirt from recently plowed farm fields.

One of the names of the deceased has been released to the public:

Shirley Harper, 88, of Franklin, Wisconsin.
