Italy Train Crash Victims

At least 23 people died when two passenger trains collided in the southeastern Puglia region of Italy on Tuesday, July 11, 2016.

The two trains were headed in opposite directions, one from Andria to Corato and the other on the opposite route. Both were on the same tracks, resulting in a head-on collision. Both trains were operated by area commuter rail service Ferrotramviaria SpA, a private company based in Bari.

The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. local time. Each engine was carrying four passenger cars. Thousands of people use the line each day, according to the BBC.

In addition to those who died, dozens were injured in the crash. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, and officials expect the number of confirmed casualties to rise.
