Jean-Guy Talbot’s legacy
From the moment Talbot joined the NHL in 1955, he tasted victory. The Québécois defenseman joined the Montreal Canadiens just as the team began its historic five-year dominance of the Stanley Cup, allowing Talbot to win a championship in each of his first five years, and then two more later in his tenure with the team.
Talbot left the Canadiens in 1967, playing briefly with the Minnesota North Stars and Detroit Red Wings before joining the St. Louis Blues for three seasons. There, he went to three more Stanley Cups, all consecutive, though the team was defeated each time. He played one last season with the Buffalo Sabres before retiring.
After leaving professional sports, Talbot went into coaching, leading the Blues for two seasons and the New York Rangers for one. All told, he played in 1,056 games, netting 285 career points and playing on six All-Star teams. Of the 12 players on the historic Canadiens squad, Don Marshall is now the last survivor.
