John Gabriel (1931–2021), “Ryan’s Hope” star

John Gabriel was an actor best known for his Emmy-nominated performance as Dr. Seneca Beaulac in “Ryan’s Hope.”

Acting career

Gabriel had early roles in movies including “The Young Lions” and “South Pacific” and TV shows including “Hawaiian Eye,” “The Untouchables,” and “77 Sunset Strip.” In 1963, he was cast as the Professor in the pilot episode of “Gilligan’s Island,’ but the role was recast before the TV show began airing. He had recurring roles in “Love of Life,” “General Hospital,” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” before landing his most recognizable role. Gabriel starred as the controlling Dr. Seneca Bealuac in “Ryan’s Hope” from 1975 to 1988 and again from 1988 to 1989. In 1980, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance. In later years, Gabriel had recurring roles on “Kate & Allie,” “Generations,” and “Days of Our Lives.” He was the producer of “The Charles Grodin Show” and also had a singing career.
