Ken Flores’ legacy
Flores didn’t get his start in comedy by the traditional route. Rather than grind his way through open-mic nights and working his way up to paid gigs, he made his first splash in the comedy world in a way that could only happen in the modern age: he went viral on YouTube and WorldStarHipHop.
That taste for making people laugh sparked Flores’ love for the craft.
While working as a bank teller, he used those comedic skills to make his way to Chicago stages, and from there, become a touring headliner. In 2022, he organized the LatinXL comedy show in Chicago. The event was a success, allowing him to move to Los Angeles, where he began to perform at legendary outlets like The Comedy Store and Hollywood Improv.
Flores had been on the rise in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. He recently appeared on the “Netflix Is a Daily Joke” podcast and was in the midst of his Butterfly Effect Tour at the time of his passing. And even with Flores in L.A., LatinXL continues in Chicago, helping shine a spotlight on Latinos in comedy.
Notable quote
“I have friends that write scripts, I have friends that are doing comedy as a gateway to get into Hollywood for movies. For me, I just wanna do standup. I just wanna write, I wanna tour, I wanna sell tickets, I wanna grow a following, and that’s it, bro. I just love comedy that much.” — interview with The Comedy Gazelle, 2023
