A lifetime of dance
A native of Canada, Seymour built her reputation on England’s stages. Still in her teens when she began dancing professionally, she joined the renowned Royal Ballet in 1959 as a principal dancer. Seymour would remained associated with the Royal Ballet for many years, becoming known for her passionate and unbound style of dancing. Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan often wrote ballets for Seymour, including his “Romeo and Juliet” and “Anastasia.” She often worked with other legendary dancers such as Rudolf Nureyev (1938–1993) and Mikhail Baryshnikov. After a decade and a half of dancing, Seymour began working as a choreographer even as she still danced. Later, she was artistic director of the Bavarian State Ballet and the Greek National Ballet.
