María Mendiola (1952–2021), singer known for “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie”

Musical career

Mendiola was working as a flamenco dancer when she formed Baccara along with fellow dancer Mayte Mateos in 1977. Their first single, the breathy “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie,” was a European hit, climbing to the tops of charts across the continent. The record went gold and Baccara was noted by the Guinness Book of Records as the top-selling female musical duo to date. Baccara had further hits including “Sorry, I’m a Lady,” “Darling,” and “Parlez-Vous Francais?” The duo competed in the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest, representing Luxembourg. Though Mendiola and Mateos split in the early 1980s, Mendiola continued performing and recording as Baccara for decades.
