Mark Carnevale’s legacy
Mark Carnevale honed his golfing skills while attending James Madison University, becoming skilled enough to go pro in 1983. He won the Virginia Open the following year, but it wasn’t until 1991 that he was able to make the leap to the PGA Tour. He was 32 at the time.
In 1992, Carnevale won the Chattanooga Classic in his first year of play, earning himself Rookie of the Year honors in the process. Two years later, he fell just short of another win in a dramatic six-man playoff at the 1994 GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic, and in 1997 he won the Nike Inland Empire Open on the Nike Tour.
In 2007, Carnevale moved to the broadcasting booth, where he became part of the Sirius/XM radio team covering PGA Tour events. He still played in tournaments – he competed in the Genesis Scottish Open shortly before his death – but his primary focus became broadcasting, where he became a mainstay of golf coverage on the radio.
