by

Mark Peel was a celebrity chef who founded the Los Angeles restaurant Campanile and appeared on TV shows including “Top Chef” and “Hells’ Kitchen.”

California cuisine

Peel was one of the stars of California cuisine, cooking for Spago and Chez Panisse in his early years. He founded Campanile in 1989 along with his then-wife, Nancy Silverton. The couple also founded La Brea bakery to supply the restaurant’s bread. La Brea has since become an international brand. In 2001, Campanile won the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant. The restaurant focused on urban rustic cuisine, sourced from local growers. After Campanile closed in 2012, Peel founded Bomba, now called Prawn Coastal. He was featured twice on “Top Chef Masters” and was a judge on “Top Chef” in 2009 and 2010. His other cooking show appearances included “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Knife Fight,” and “Kitchen Nightmares.”
