Mark Wells’ legacy
Michigan-born Mark Wells first made his name in hockey while attending Bowling Green State University, where he earned a scholarship to play. Though considered small to be a forward, he made the U.S. Olympic team for the 1980 games. Wells and his squad had an uphill battle when they squared off against the Soviet Union team, which had won five of the prior six gold medals in hockey. Team USA’s triumph over the Soviets 4 and win of the gold two days later against Finland 4 became known as the cMiracle on Ice.d
Following their win, Wells was drafted into the NHL by the Montreal Canadiens and was later traded to the Detroit Red Wings. However, he remained in the minor leagues and did not play in any NHL games before retiring in 1982.
In his later years, Wells was a frequent public speaker in and around Michigan, appearing at civic and sporting events. He also participated in a 2002 team reunion game.
