2 min readTattoos are moving from the counterculture into the mainstream, and as more and more people get inked, they're discovering just how personal and emotionally significant a tattoo can be. That especially applies when the tattoo is in memory of a loved one. Check out our gallery of some of the best memorial tattoos.

Paris Jackson remembered her famous father, "King of Pop" Michael Jackson, with a new tattoo of the cover art from his 1989 album "Dangerous." It's a work in progress, with another session still to follow during which shading will be added.

Lady Gaga has two memorial tattoos. One is a peace sign in memory of John Lennon, pictured here. Lennon and the Beatles are among the artists who inspired Lady Gaga's own musical career, and she grew up near the famous Strawberry Fields memorial to Lennon in New York City's Central Park. She also had David Bowie's face inked on her ribcage shortly after his death.

Miley Cyrus has two memorial tattoos — one, in memory of a friend and two grandfathers who died of lung cancer, says "Just breathe." The other, pictured here, is in memory of her dog Floyd, with an image of the pup and the words, "With a little help from my fwends."

Kanye West lost his beloved mother, Donda West, in 2007. Of the experience, he later said, "It was like losing an arm and a leg and trying to walk through that." In 2016, he got two tattoos on his wrists – one with his mother's birthdate in Roman numerals, the other with his daughter's.

Chloe Grace Moretz remembered her grandmother with a memorial tattoo on her ribcage. It reads, "Janette Duke" — her grandmother's name — in script.
