Musical career
Early in his career, Henderson worked as a session musician in Detroit, playing for artists including Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin (1942–2018), and Marvin Gaye (1939–1984). He began playing with Davis in 1970, at the dawn of the jazz legend’s fusion period. After remaining with David for seven years, Henderson embarked on a solo career, releasing singles including “Take Me I’m Yours,” “Be My Girl,” and “In the Night-Time.” He also sang lead vocals in “You Are My Starship” by jazz drummer Norman Connors.
