Nueva Trova leader
Pablo Milanés was a musician who was part of the Bohemian scene in Cuba. He supported Fidel Castro’s regime but was sent to a forced labor camp for more than a year for being a free thinker. He was one of the founders of the genre of music known as Nueva Trova, traditional folk music with political themed lyrics that peaked in the 1970s. He released many albums and won a Latin Grammy award. He moved to Spain several years ago where he was being treated for cancer.
Notable Quote
“It was a concentration camp and I spent a year and a half of my life there.” “It wasn’t that there was any physical punishment, it was the fact you were shut away, with hard physical labor, cutting sugar cane dawn to dusk.” He said he wasn’t exactly sure why he was sent there. “I was living a bohemian lifestyle. . . who knows, the whole attitude of youth at the time.” – He told the Guardian in 1999 about being sent to a forced labor camp in Cuba
