Polo Polo (1944–2023), Mexican comedian

1 min read

by

Polo Polo was one of Mexico’s most popular comedians, with an international following.

Comedy

Born Leopoldo Roberto García Peláez Benítez, Polo Polo began doing comedy in small Mexican clubs as a young man after a few years working in his family’s shoe business. As he began to play in larger venues and record his act for live albums, he became known for his racy humor. He made this humor particularly clear in his series “Son Para Adultos” (“This Is for Adults”). Polo Polo’s comedy typically couldn’t be played on the radio because of the language he used, but his albums still sold many copies and brought fans out to his appearances. By the late 1980s, he was making appearances in the U.S. as well as in his native Mexico, attracting a broader Spanish-speaking audience.
