Toll Brothers
Toll founded Toll Brothers in 1967 alongside his brother, Bruce Toll. Their father had built homes, and the brothers built on his knowledge to create their business. Starting with homes in Philadelphia, Toll Brothers expanded to 24 states, each year building thousands of homes that were sometimes nicknamed McMansions. Their earliest homes sold for $17,500 (equivalent to about $144,000 in 2022), but they soon began focusing on luxury homes, sometimes with million-dollar price tags. Toll was CEO of Toll Brothers from its founding until 2010, when he stepped down but still remained active with the company.
Notable quote
“When you buy a new home, you put all the excavators and concrete foundation workers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, roofers, siders, window manufacturers to work. I would guess 20 percent of the work force in one way or another is connected with new housing.” —from a 2010 interview for the New York Times
