A native of Albany, Georgia who began playing on a toy guitar at four years old, Russell Malone was a largely self-taught musician who learned from watching artists like B.B. King (19252015) and George Benson on television. By 1988, he was playing with jazz musician Jimmy Smith.
In the 1990s, Malone19s profile grew when he played several years with Harry Connick Jr., then joined Diana Krall19s Grammy Award-nominated trio during the peak of its acclaim. He performed on the Canadian singer19s 1999 Best Jazz Vocal Performance-winning LP, When I Look in Your Eyes.
Malone launched a solo career in 1992, his eponymous debut album the first of 15 solo projects. His most recent was 2017s Time for the Dancers. He also became an in-demand player, performing with Sonny Rollins, Branford Marsalis, Ron Carter (19532024), Wynton Marsalis, and many others.
