Bey was born in Newark, New Jersey, where she was a member of the sibling musical act Andy & the Bey Sisters. She moved to Toronto in 1964 and became a popular live music draw. She recorded albums with jazz great Horace Silver and sang on the 1985 music star charity song “Tears Are Not Enough” that featured Canadian legends Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot. Bey wrote and starred in “Indigo,” a blues and jazz cabaret about the history of Black music. The show was broadcast on TV and won two Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
