Sam Rubin’s legacy
Before he became a mainstay of the Los Angeles airwaves, Sam Rubin was an entertainment reporter who did work for the National Enquirer, the Movietime channel, and other outlets in the 1980s. In 1991, he joined KTLA and was assigned to its floundering new show, “KTLA Morning News.” Rubin’s sense of humor quickly drew him attention and, at times, made waves. He famously climbed into bed between Rosanne Barr and Tom Arnold at the height of their fame. He also caused his colleague, Hal Fishman, to hire a lawyer after taking offense to jokes Rubin made about him on the air.
Known for his lighthearted approach and easy-going interviews, Rubin’s work earned him multiple Emmy Awards, a Golden Mike award, and a Los Angeles Press Club Award for best entertainment reporter. The Southern California Broadcasters Association recognized him with lifetime achievement honors, among many others.
Rubin was a founding member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which holds the annual Critics Choice Movie Awards. He was also a producer who helped create “Hollywood Uncensored with Sam Rubin” and TV specials such as the Critics Choice annual Celebration of Black Cinema. He was also the co-author of two biographies, “Mia Farrow: Flower Child, Madonna, Muse” and “Jackie: A Lasting Impression.”
