1970s TV star
Scoey Mitchellstarted out as a nightclub comedian and then became a regular cast member during the second season of “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.” His big break came when he played the lead in the 1970 sitcom version of the Neil Simon play “Barefoot in the Park.” The series was the first since the 1950s to feature a predominantly black cast, but it was canceled after 12 episodes. Mitchell was popular during the 1970s and 1980s. He had a recurring role on the classic sitcom “Rhoda,” and made guest appearances on “Lou Grant,” “Police Story,” and “Taxi.” He played Richard Pryor’s father in the movie “Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling,” and was a panelist on many game shows including “Match Game” and “Hollywood Squares.” Later, he was a pioneering TV producer, writer, and director.
