Sergei Berezin’s legacy

Born in Voskresensk, Russia, Sergei Berezin got his start on the ice there, playing four seasons for Voskresensk Khimik and drawing NHL attention when, across the 1993-’94 season, he scored 41 points in 40 games. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs and made his NHL debut in 1996, appearing in 75 games and notching 25 goals and 41 points in his first year. He ended up on the NHL All-Rookie team as a result.

Berezin spent five years with Toronto overall, playing left wing and scoring more than 40 points in three of those years there. In 1998-’99, he helped the Leafs go to the Eastern Conference final. However, he was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in 2001, then did brief stints with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, and Washington Capitals before retiring. All told, he racked up 160 career goals and 286 points over 502 games.
