Acclaimed Songwriter
Shirley Eikhard was born in New Brunswick, Canada where she learned to play the guitar. At the young age of 15, her song “It Takes Time” was recorded by Anne Murray and became a big hit in Canada. A year later, she released her self-titled debut album and won Juno Awards in 1973 and 1974 for best female country artist. On a trip to Nashville in 1985, she wrote the song “Something to Talk About,” which is about two people who are intrigued that others think they are having a secret relationship. Bonnie Raitt had a cassette tape with some of Eikhard’s songs and reached out to her about recording “Something to Talk About” for an upcoming album. The song was an international hit, reaching the top ten in the U.S. and Canada. Later, one of her songs was recorded by Cher and she was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
