Simon Fisher-Becker’s legacy
Fisher-Becker loved acting when he was in school, but he didn’t initially consider it as a career. Instead, he worked in civil service until a layoff left him at a crossroads. He took the opportunity to study acting, and by the early 1990s, he was appearing on such British TV shows as “Hale & Pace” and “One Foot in the Grave.” A big break came with the large, all-British cast needed for 2001’s first “Harry Potter” film. In it, Fisher-Becker played the jovial Fat Friar, one of the resident ghosts at Hogwarts.
Even more notable for Fisher-Becker was his memorable role on “Doctor Who.” He was cast as Dorium Maldovar, appearing alongside the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith. With key roles in three episodes and a prequel video, Dorium became a fan-favorite character, a blue-skinned alien who dealt in the black market. Fisher-Becker said that the exposure on “Doctor Who” opened new doors in his career.
Later, he had numerous TV roles on “Getting On,” “Puppy Love,” “Waterside,” “Doctors,” “Sherlock Holmes,” and other shows. He was part of the ensemble in the Oscar-winning 2012 musical film “Les Miserables,” plus had voice roles on such podcasts as “Iris Wildthyme” and “The Glam Gizmo.”
Fisher-Becker on visiting the TARDIS on the “Doctor Who” set
“Being a ‘Doctor Who’ fan, I was open mouthed like a ten-year-old most of the time. When I saw the Blue Box too, I suddenly became quite emotional and found myself holding out my hand to touch it.” — from a 2020 interview with the Time Warriors
