Born in New York City, Whitey Forddonned a New York Yankees uniform for his entire 16-year Major League Baseball career. Ford holds the best winning percentage of any pitcher in the 20thcentury, with a record of 236 wins against only 106 losses. Heis the winningest pitcher in Yankees history andwasan importantpart of thedynasty that won six World Series titles in the 1950s and early 1960s. Ford still holdsWorld Seriesrecords forgames and starts, innings pitched,victories and strikeouts.He was a 10-time All-Star, won the Cy Young award in 1961 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1974.Ford served in the Army during the Korean War. Though opposites in personality, the outgoing Ford and shy Yankees star Mickey Mantle were best friends andwereknown for theiradventuresout on the town.
