Theodore Strauss Obituary

Theodore H. "Ted" Strauss, well-known retired banker, dealmaker, civic leader and philanthropist, died at his Preston Hollow home Friday morning after a lengthy illness. He was 89.

Mr. Strauss co-founded Susan Crane Packaging Inc., a high-end gift-wrap and packaging company in 1951. In 1975, he led a group of investors, including Marcus, in opening United National Bank in the historic downtown Kirby Building. Houston-based First City Bancorporation, one of the state's largest bank holding companies, bought the Dallas bank in 1980 and used it to build its North Texas banking network.

Mr. Strauss served as chairman of First City Bank of Dallas until 1985, when the holding company and its banks succumbed to the statewide financial debacle. He joined left commercial banking Bear Stearns & Co. as senior managing director of its Dallas office.

In 1998, at 73, Mr. Strauss helped organize Dallas-based Texas Capital Bancshares Inc., serving as chairman of the executive committee But he stayed on at Bear Stearns, which he once called his "last watering hole."

His death came just six months after that of his older brother, Robert "Bob" Strauss, the colorful Dallas lawyer who was one of the nation's top political figures. Ted Strauss' first wife, Annette, was Dallas' first elected woman mayor. She died in 1998, after 52 years of marriage.

Services are pending.

My dear "Mr, Strauss" or as you so fondly requested, just call me Ted. Although we only worked together a short time, you taught me more about banking in one year than I ever dreamed possible. I will treasure fondly my memory of the day you interviewed me. You threw every politically incorrect question at me possible and I answered everything as boldly and politically incorrect right back. When you asked me if I had any banking experience, I said, actually, I dated a Bank President once! You laughed so hard and said you're hired. I need someone who can answer the tough questions our clients throw at us every day. I can teach you everything you need to know about banking....and thus, a great friendship was born. I will never forget you! RIP.
