George Schumacher Obituary

Schumacher, George John

George Schumacher, 90, of Endwell passed away peacefully on December 12, 2015 in Summerville, SC near the home of his youngest son, Eric Scott. George was the first born son of Viola Esther and George Edwin Schumacher of Lindenwold, NJ and entered this world on December 19, 1924. After high school, George joined the U.S. Navy in the communications corps where he attained the rank of Lieutenant JG. Once his tour of duty was completed, George attended college at Bucknell University where he met his loving wife of 59 years, Frances Louise. In time, George earned his Ph.D. at Cornell University and did some post-doctoral research at the North Carolina State University. It was his love of academia that led to his lifelong dream job when he became a college professor at Harpur College, which eventually became the University of Binghamton. It was when he was teaching and training the minds of young students that George was in his element whether teaching about the algaes or the plants of the world. After a career of 35+ years at the University, George retired and travelled the world with Frances. George was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, and eldest son, George James. George is survived by his two sons, Eric and Brian, his daughter-in-law Kathy, and his 5 grandchildren, Emily, Amy, Anna, Danielle, and Dylan. A memorial service will be held in George's honor on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 11am at Our Saviour Lutheran Church at 731 Hooper Road in Endwell. A luncheon will be served in George's honor after the service.

My condolences on the passing of your father, Professor Schumacher. I worked in the Biology Department office many years ago. I have a small painting he made for me. I treasure it. Dr. Schumacher was a truly kind and sincere gentleman. You must have wonderful memories surrounding you. May God comfort you.

To the Family of Prof. Schumacher,
As you already well know, the Prof. was a person dedicated to his work, and it showed in his positive approach to life. I remember his smile, which was evident almost all the time. Keep the nice memories and he will be near you at all times. Our class of 1956 at Harpur was honored by his presence.

Eric and Brian, I am so very sorry to learn of your loss. I not only grew up with your brother George, but our mothers were very close friends. I was acquainted with your dad here at Binghamton University. I have very fond memories of many heart to heart conversations whenever I ran into him on and off campus. He was a good man and will truly be missed!

Dr.Schumacher was the finest teacher I ever had. Always generous with his time and loved all his students. This is a tremendous loss to this community. May he rest in peace.
