Glen ASHMAN Obituary

ASHMAN, Glen Edward On August 17, 2018, Glen Edward Ashman lost his three year battle with multiple health issues at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Pamela, and their children, Michelle and her husband, Ryan Russo, and Kevin. He is also survived by his sister, Kim, and her husband, Pat Smith, and his uncle, Bernard Braun. Glen was born in New York City on February 7, 1956 to the late Edward and Renate Ashman. Glen's family eventually moved to Atlanta where he graduated from North Druid Hills High School and Emory University. At the age of 5, Glen was already expressing his passion for the law and he fulfilled that dream when he received his Juris Doctorate in 1980 from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon. He opened his solo practice in East Point, GA that same year and in 1988 was appointed by the East Point City Council as a Municipal Court Judge. Glen's love of the law led him into teaching CE courses through the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education to municipal judges across the state. This also presented him the opportunity for many years to chair the Municipal Court's Bench book committee. In 2017, Glen was honored as the first recipient of the Educational Achievement Award for his many years of service as an ICJE teacher and Bench book author. Beginning in 2018, it was renamed the Glen Ashman Educational Achievement Award. In June, Glen was honored as the longest sitting Municipal Court Judge in Georgia with 30 years on the bench. Glen loved Star Trek, Dr. Who, rock-n-roll music, Delphi forums, and cooking. He was famous for his macaroni and cheese. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to: Atlanta Legal Aid Society, 54 Ellis Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30303 or online at https://atlantalegalaid.org/ways-to-give. There will be a celebration of Glen's life on Saturday, September 8th, 11:00 a.m. at North Fayette United Methodist Church, 847 New Hope Road, Fayetteville, GA 30214. Fh

What a shock to find our friend at Delphi Forums has passed. I shall certainly miss Glen. He was a friend to all here and helped us whenever he could by giving information that we needed in everyday life. What fun Glen was in the forum Southern States! I shall always remember his recipes for Thanksgiving! I will miss being able to run by and check them out when needed. His family, I believe, is much blessed and richer in life because of him, because if he was the man he was for us, I can only imagine what he was to his family! God bless you all and keep you safe in His arms.

I was saddened to learn of Glen's death. We met in our first year of law school; and lived in the dorm across the hall from each other. We remained friends throughout school. Over the next 40 years, we bumped into each other regularly -- frequently at the Varsity for some reason. Every time I saw him, we just picked right up where we ended our last conversation.

Glen was smart. His interests were broader than the law. He was funny and friendly. He was a decent man. The other dorm mates and I enjoyed pulling pranks on each other (sometimes pretty risky pranks). When our mutual friend, Cesar Armstrong of Miami, and I were assigned the job, we usually chose Glen as the victim. There were two reasons. First, we could outrun Glen. Second, he was a good sport. I don't recall ever seeing Glen without a smile. I never saw the guy angry.

Glen was not without fault. He had a guitar and he was terrible. Every song he played sounded the same: "chanka, chanka, chanka...... chanka, chanka, chanka." Most of us tried to study after supper. Glen practiced and his friends protested: "Chanka, chanka, chanka." "Shut up Glen." Chanka, chanka, chanka." "Shut up Glen."

In the dining hall one day, Glen announced that he had perfected a new song and he invited us to his room to hear it. It went something like this: "Chanka, chanka, chanka." The audience went mad.

I should mention that Glen was in law school during the days of disco. Perhaps he was constantly practicing that great disco hit, "Funky Town."

A final, brief observation. Glen had every type of convenience size cooking appliance on the market in his tiny dorm room. The craziest was hot dog cooker.

As stated above, Glen was a decent man. I don't think one can be rated much better than that.

I regret that I cannot attend Glen's service as I will be in New York. Peace to Pamela and the rest of the family.

So sorry to hear about Glen. I never met him in person, but knew him as a cyberpal through Delphiforums. He was one of the top forum hosts. We were all pulling for Glen as he struggled with health issues the last couple of years. Glen was a fighter and always managed to bounce back after each setback. He will be missed. RIP Glen and condolences to the Ashman family.
