Gerry Metz Obituary

Gerry Metz

Cave Creek - Gerald Michael Metz, 75, of Cave Creek, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2018 with his family by his side. Gerry, born July 22, 1943 to Eleanor and Alfred Metz was born, raised and educated in Chicago, Illinois. He moved out to Scottsdale in 1971 where he was an instructor of oil painting and life drawing at the Phoenix Art Museum. From 1973 on, Gerry devoted himself to being a fine artist. He was an Old West painter and sculptor who used his travels over the last 50 years stretching from Arizona to Jackson Hole as his inspiration to paint and depict the life of the Pioneers, the Native Americans, Fur Trappers and Cowboy ranch life. Gerry often painted landscapes capturing the beauty of the Rocky Mountains and Grand Tetons. All of Gerry's subjects underscored his free spirit and enjoyment of the outdoors. Gerry is survived by his wife Diane of 21 years, six children and ten grandchildren. Gerry will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Jason (Sarah), Justin (Nicole), Kevin (Crystal), and J.D. (Rubi) and his stepchildren, Amanda (Jeremy) and William (Marta), by his brothers, Ronald (Judi) and Jim (Mary), by his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Linda along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. His heart was full of love for his 10 grandchildren, Maya, Nicolas, Caleb, Shelby, Kieran, River, Taylor, Hunter, Dublin and Brela. Gerry was happiest when he was outdoors, golfing, fishing, and enjoying the Arizona weather. He will be remembered as being a man of integrity, compassion, great humor and a selfless, loving husband, father and grandfather. His family liked to refer to him as "The Man, The Myth, The Legend." The family has had a private service at Messengers Mortuary surrounded by Gerry's sculptures.
