Benjamin Rolfe-Kizer, 59, died February 4th, 2017 with his life partner/husband, Wally Straughn, sister-in-law and close friend at his side. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Iris and Bernard Rolfe of Deming, New Mexico and his mother-in-law, Jessie Straughn, of Beulaville, North Carolina. Ben leaves behind his husband and partner of 27 years, Wally Straughn; brothers, Dan and Jerry; sisters, Carol and Dianna; several nieces and nephews; a large family of sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nephews and nieces in North Carolina, Virginia and Arizona, as well as many, many close friends. In his early years he taught special education in the Gall-up-McKinley County School. He held a Bachelors degree in History and English, as well as a Master's degree in Education. Ben was a published author; a political consultant and a digital artist. He had a passion for photography, electronic gadgets, adventures and wildlife. He enjoyed being outside exploring and snapping pictures. Digital photography provided Ben with a way to express his unique approach to life. In Ben's words, "The joy I feel in my art is revealed in the surprises I experience as I explore and play with images." Ben's gift of perseverance and passion for life will remain with each of us that was fortunate enough to know him. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Ben's memory can do so by donating to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. Ben spent many hours there taking pictures of the plants and animals.
