You have been gone over a year now.I still see you and I siting on your couch talking and laughing about old times good and bad. I always think about the things and people you told me to look out for. 2008 showed me how much you give and share with your family and friends. You were one of my heros growing up and still after you have left. Big brother I miss you and I still enjoy our talks each time I visit your spirit and gravesite. One day I will see you again. Love "Bro" Gershwin Shane

Dear Phyllis,
Our heartfelt sympathy, prayers, and love go out to you and your entire family. Dwaine's talent was a tremendous gift to so many, including all of us in the Central High School Class of 1968. Your love and pride in him has been so evident, as well as your love and trust in the Lord. I remember how beautifully you played "I'll Fly Away" for us in church, and I know that God has you and Dwaine and all of your wonderful family wrapped in His loving arms. May He begin to replace your pain with the anticipation of His wonderful promises. Someday you'll all be together again. You are a wonderful woman and a loving mother! We love you.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Dillard family. I didn't know Dwayne personally but I also attended Central. He was an outstanding ball player. I joined the Navy in 1969 and just happened to meet a woman in San Diego who said she was his cousin and she recounted their escapades on 24th and Lake.

Our prayers are with the family. God will see all of you through this difficult time. Dwaine and our beloved brother Ben Brown were friends and played on the championship basketball team at Central High School. Dwaine had a wonderful personality and will be missed by many people who knew him.

I was surprised and saddened to hear Dwaine had died. He was too strong. Ms. Briggs and the family know how we feel. This cracks our hearts wide open with sadness and joy at the same time. Sadness fior your loss and joy for Heaven's gain. You know, Dwaine always did like to sky. So with Heaven as ground zero I'll bet he felt right at home and took off. May special blessing be with you today and always. Peace.

July 18, 2008

Carlos and Family;
My most heartfelt condolences on the passing of your loved one. Dwaine was the standard by which all others who desired to play basketball at Central were measured. We all know, while that was a small part of who he was, his God-given talents have touched many of us across the generations. May the Lord ease your earthly pain and give you peace and joy as you reflect on the blessing that was his time on earth.

Sheila Gauff

July 18, 2008

South Omaha was a communities of families: Briggs, Barfields, Pratts, Gauffs, and a many more. We all celebrated and embraced our collective triumphs and short comings; but we stood up and loved each other no matter what. Those years in South Omaha with my extended community family helped me realized how BLESSED I was when I moved away from home and saw how poor in spirit and love so many people and families were.

Ms. Briggs, the love for your children and community is with me every day. Your watchful eye and loving heart that you instilled in your children and those of us in South Omaha is felt every day. Dwaine lives in the eyes of those he has helped shine; his love lives in the heart of his brothers and sisters as he helped to guide and make them better men and women; his passion for life was in every dribble and pass. Yet his greatest accomplishment was his family.

But no love is stronger than the love of his son for his mother.

Ms. Briggs you gave him life and he gave you back love.

To the Briggs Family, from Mrylian, Theresa, Carl, Archie, Calvin, Sheila, and Clayton; we love you and share your precious memories as well as offer our shoulders for your loss. Just remember he's not gone, just look around at each other, you’ll see his mark on everything around you, his humor, his energy, his passion, his joys, and lot of his big heart in each one of you to keep him alive forever.

Love is never forgotten.

God Bless

To Mrs. Briggs & Dillard family,
We are sorry to hear of your lost Dwaine. I remember Dwaine as a mature, good looking and a pleasant person to be around. He never really hung out with us young, immature, party goers, teenagers. I always had a lot of respect for Dwaine, for the way he carried his self.
Dwaine will continue to live through all of the memories he helped to create, by giving of him self and the people he touch.

May GOD continue to be in your lives.

To Mrs. Briggs & all the family of Dwaine. I met Dwaine at Central High School in 1966 or 67. I thought he was crazy! But it wasn't long when I found out he simply had a nutty, wonderfully loving personality. We became very very close as the years went on and I was proud to call him my friend. Ms Phyllis, you always made Dwaine's friends feel right at home when we came to Dwaine's house, feeding us and making us sit there until we finished eating.....even the rice, remember?. There was so many of us that hung around each other, and it was a kinship I cannot describe. We miss him but we know he is in a better place, how wonderful it is to know that he is no longer suffering. It took me a while to sign this book because we all have a time when we need to accept what has happened, today was my time, and I need to let Dwaine go knowing I will see him again on the other side. May God strengthen and keep you. We will continue to pray for you. I, along with the entire Class of 1968 will always remember the wonderful person in Dwaine Dillard Sr, and we will always love him. Thank you for the opportunity to express how I felt about Dwaine. Love forever.

Forever thankful for the special and loving friendship I had with Dwaine, and I am especially thankful for that sunny day in March of this year, when we were able to spend the day together and visit our old haunts - the Chez and Dew Drop In - while celebrating Dwaine's birthday. Will always remember Ewins, the VFW and the many games of dominoes (at least now you should be able to remember which one is the spinner!). Your "baby girl" will miss you!

To the family: May the Lord give you the strength to make it through this very difficult time. Dwaine was a very special person and I pray your sweet memories will keep you comforted until you're able to meet again.

Darnell (and family)
God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow or sun without rain. But God did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and a light for the way. And for all who believe in his kingdom above, He answers their faith... Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

To my Dad:
You came into my life at the age of 3 and from then on I never felt as if I were your STEP child. You were my DAD. I remember when I was in the first grade and Mom had left to work early and forgot to do my hair for school, so UNFORTUNATELY you were the next best. You sat me down and put a huge french braid right down the middle of my hair. I appreciate it, but that was the ugliest french braid I had ever seen. I remember you taught me how to fish. I was so scared to grab the gooey worms, but you made me learn. You even taught me how to scale the fish (p.s. I'm a pro at it now). Our favorite restaurant was Schlotzski's.. Large original~extra cheese! That's the only thing I get from that place still to this day. My best and most proud memory is the most recent. I felt so accomlished when I saw you standing at the edge of the fence at my track meet with your fuschia pink polo on (you thought you were fly). I had to show you how good I was. I felt like a little girl again ready to make my Dad proud. I took one last glance your way before I got in the blocks just to make sure you were still watching, and you were. You was so proud of me... Dad, I love and miss you. The pain and suffering is over, eternal life prevails! My heavenly father will take good care of you. To the fam: I love yall and may God continue to hold and console our hearts.

Though weeping may endure for a night, joy cometh in the morning. To this bereaved family, please know that your loved one was held in high esteem by a great many of his fellow Native Omahans. Dwayne was not only tall in stature but he was also a giant in character with a humble heart. He will be missed by all of us who so proudly were led into victory after victory on the Central Eagle's basketball court by this Eagle who flew higher than them all. Be at peace till we meet again.
