Anthony Spangler Obituary

He graduated from high school two months ago, had taken a class at Glendale Community College and planned to study archaeology.

It was Anthony Spangler's first summer out of school. He relaxed, hung out with friends and, three weeks ago, took a job at the Wal-Mart Supercenter near 83rd Avenue and Union Hills Drive.

It was there, as he collected shopping carts in the parking lot, that the 18-year-old Glendale man was shot and killed Tuesday.

Anthony's grandparents, Norma and Tim Blaylock, raised him since he was a baby. Photos of the lanky, red-haired boy with a wide smile lay on their living room table Wednesday: senior pictures, riding a quad at Yuma sand dunes, wearing his cap and gown. He'd graduated at the top of his class at Ace Charter School, where his grandmother said the small classes suited him.

Norma, like many Valley residents, heard of the shooting shortly after it happened. When she heard the location, she panicked.

"I just had that feeling," she said.

Anthony didn't pick up when she called his cellphone. She called Wal-Mart and was told her grandson had been involved in a double slaying.

On Wednesday evening, police detectives again stopped by their home. The Blaylocks hoped to hear something to explain what seems a random act. They also planned to attend a candlelight vigil at Wal-Mart.

Like many teens, Anthony liked computers and had his own site at myspace.com. Visitors posted notes there throughout the day and provided news of the vigil.

The couple, looking broken, spoke of their grandson.

"He was the greatest," Tim said, his voice rising, unable to say more.

"He had a heart of gold. Even if he was down, he was still smiling," Norma said.

Donations to help Anthony's family can be made at any Bank of America branch at Account No. 004370123710.

My old Delta Force buddy! Stealth Fox. I had a random thought about you today, and wondered where you had been all these years later. I thought I was going to random message you today on facebook. Was pretty shocked at the news I learned. I wont forget the fun times we had, and what a genuine guy you were. Can still hear your voice, and remember how funny you were. Thanks for the memories. I never actually met you in real life, but you left a lasting impact on me, and helped me through some tough teenage years. I'm grateful to have known you. I wish good ol FireWolf and Stealth Fox could run it back one more time. Until next time, old friend.

I only just heard of the tragic loss of Tony. I used to teach at the ACES, and I had Tony in many classes. Tony could always make anyone laugh--especially with that "end-zone" dance he used to do. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends, and his ACES family as I can only imagine the depth of their loss. God bless you Tony--you were one of a kind!!

I did not know Tony but my son went to school with him and echoes the very sentiments that all they knew him share. His smile, his kindness. It is amasing how my son has been affected by this tragic loss. He seems to have a drive now to do better in his life. He knows now that it could be cut short in an instant. My daughter works at the very Wal Mart and I could not imagine what I would have done if it had been her. Every day I pray for strength for his family and friends.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Tony. I grew up in Glendale and am planning to move back. I had the news on that evening. I was thinking "Give me a sign "if moving back to Glendale. Two minutes later I heard the newscast mention Glendale Arizona. I was thinking that is my sign to move back. Before learning of the shooting. Just reading the guest book entries makes me feel that I have known him for years... I am 30 and tony was alot younger than me and had done many more things than I think I could have possibly done at that young age..You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

My Dearest Tony-Your Zest for life, positive outlook and endearing smile will forever remain in my heart. I can't tell you how blessed I feel to have been a part of your life. I was honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to teach such an incredible young man. I still can hear your graduation speech so clearly in my mind and your words continue to have such a profound impact on me and I can hope many others- "Live Life to the Fullest, you get a Fresh Start Each and Everyday". Tony- that is exactly how you lived your life and your memory will continue to inspire many each and everyday. I will dearly miss that sweet smiling face but I know that you will continue to smile at us from above! We Love You Tony- May You Rest In Peace!

Tony was a sports photographer in my journalism class at the ACES, he always had enthusiasm and a smile for me, on game days camera in one hand and film in the other.

Tony was in a school play towards the end of the year, he played a "man-witch" he would absolutley not stop smiling, so as you can all imagine, it was hard to envision him as even the tiniest bit scary. I had the pleasure of turning his grin with the help of theatrical make up into a memorable performance. I will forever remember Tony as he jumped out and yelled"arrrgh I am MAN-WITCH" He was amazing. I also had the pleasure of playing war games with himself another student and teacher after school. Tony even if he was losing would say things like, "thats okay, I let you have that, etc." He never was a sore loser or a gloater. I was honored to have him in class and to be able to share some laughs with him. Thank you Tim Norma and Jim the honor was all mine.

Tony's family-

I just like to say my heart goes out to you all..life is short as they say, Tony's life was too short and that breaks my heart. God has a plan for us all, and I know god's plan for tony now is to watch over all of us. I did go to school with Tony at the Aces and did talk to him online. There's a lesson in Tony;s death and thats not to take life for granted and to know it could be taken any day any time, Tony will forever be in my heart. I will be at his funeral tomorrow.. and to Tony wherever you are may god guide you to his kingdom, May you have ever lasting life there. We will all see you again someday. God bless.

You were a friend of my son and the two of you were involved with the caans together, and he will continue with the caans knowing that you will be right there with him, watching over everyone. We were just talking about you a couple of days before you were taken from all of us. There will be a deep void in his life, you were friends both at ACES and after he graduated. You will be missed by all of your friends and family and you touched alot of people's lives during your time here. To the family of Tony, you will be in our thoughts and prayers and know that Tony will never be forgotten. May God lay his hand on your shoulders and guide you though your time of sorrow. To the dearest student,

Tony, you touched the lives of my young students through your love of learning, kindness, and compassion for life. You are a mentor they will never forget and will forever carry in their hearts. You were able to make better students out of them and a better teacher out of me. You taught many lessons that I will carry with me throughout my years of teaching. Your smile brightened the brightest of days and any grey day that snuck in. You are the wind beneath the wings of The ACES students. Your memory will be with us always. Thank you for the opportunity to have known you. I am a better person because of you. With much love and gratitude, Miss Krista

We recently relocated to Peoria, AZ from New York City. Every day in New York, you hear about various crimes, but you NEVER get used to it.

I may have seen Anthony while visiting WalMart's, but I didn't personally know him. However, just looking at his picture and reading all the loving words from his friends and co-workers, our hearts go out to this young man who was just starting out in life. As a tribute to both Anthony and Patrick, let's warmly greet each and every WalMart employee as we enter and exit the store. They are the individuals who make our shopping trips trouble-free and as pleasant as possible. They're the ones who keep us coming back to WalMart each and every week.

Thank you, Patrick and Anthony, for your greetings, smiles and assistance. Thank you all WalMart employees for the courtesies and pleasantries extended to all of us.

You befriend him because of your love and spirit you show me that I have to give my son some rope to learn the world and not keep him so close to home. You took him all round showed him how to drive and took him home to your family. Where your family treated him like one of the family members. He talks about those shoes you bought him everyday. Now he says he will have them for the rest of his life because an friend like you bought them for him not wanting anything back. I will always love you forever.
