Joan M. Cawley, age 88, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2015. Joan was born on January 10, 1927 in McKeesport, PA. Joan had a love for both education and art. She received a M.A. - Education from the University of Michigan and taught school for several years before beginning to raise a family. To continue her love of art Joan began volunteering as a docent at the Wichita Art Museum and eventually became president of the Wichita Art Museum Members, Inc. (now known as Friends of the Wichita Art Museum). In 1974 she opened White Buffalo Gallery in Wichita, KS. The gallery, later known simply as Joan Cawley Gallery, continued to operate in Scottsdale, AZ until 2014. Joan was respected by both artists and clients for her knowledge and love for the artwork and the industry that she so deeply enjoyed. She will be greatly missed in the lives of those she touched and loved. Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leo, in 2005. She is survived by her son Kevin, daughter Karin, son Kary (wife Anne) and two grandchildren (Ariane and Kilian), all of whom live in Scottsdale, AZ. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from 11 am - 1 pm at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E Indian School Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to either Friends of the Wichita Art Museum (www.wichitaartmuseum.org) or the Human Society of Central Arizona (www.humanesocietycentralaz.org).
