Naomi Peck Obituary

Naomi Greenburg Peck

Ceresco

September 29, 1944 - June 17, 2015

Naomi Peck, of Ceresco, Michigan, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 17, 2015.  She was 70 years old. Naomi was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where she graduated from Senn High School.  She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and later earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where she met her husband of 44 years, Lee Peck.  They married in 1971 and Naomi and Lee moved to Sycamore, Illinois, where they raised their two sons, Jonathan and Joel.

Naomi worked from home as a studio artist, managed their business, Lee Peck Jewelry, and watched the kids while Lee was a professor, teaching Jewelry and Metalsmithing at Northern Illinois University.  Both talented and accomplished artists, Naomi and Lee often traveled the country with their two children, exhibiting their artwork at juried art fairs.  Their art has also been featured in a number of prestigious art galleries and private collections, including that of former Illinois Governor James Thompson, along with various heads of state, including a former President of Mexico and a former Prime Minister of Israel.  Naomi and Lee were long time exhibitors at a number of renowned shows, including the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair.  After Lee retired from teaching, they moved to the Battle Creek area, where Lee had grown up.  Together they raised walnut trees on several area farms and oversaw the transformation of a large timber frame barn into their dream retirement home, a one-of-a-kind endeavor that took years to complete.

Naomi was politically active and passionate about progressive issues. Though not exceptionally religious, her Jewish heritage and culture remained very important to her.  Naomi possessed a beautiful singing voice, and she cherished every opportunity that she had to sing with "Koleynu," the choir group at Congregation Beth Shalom in DeKalb, Illinois, even after moving to Michigan.  At home, Naomi loved keeping track of the migratory birds that frequented their pond from spring to fall, taking their two Vizslas, Kita and Loca, for runs in the field, tending to her flower gardens, completing the daily crossword puzzles and curling up in bed at night with a good book.  A lifelong baseball fan, Naomi cheered for her Cubbies, but was also a converted Tigers fan.

Naomi was kind, gentle, compassionate, caring and thoughtful.  She had an extended group of friends dating as far back as her teenage years, with whom she made great effort to stay in touch.  Naomi loved to talk on the phone.  And everyone loved to talk to Naomi.  What Naomi really loved most of all, though, was her family.  Dedicated, devoted and supportive beyond compare, Naomi lovingly placed the needs of others ahead of her own, particularly when it came to family.  Like her mother before her, she was the heart of the family and caring for those she loved was her most important job in life.

Naomi is survived by her husband, Lee, son Jonathan and his wife Jennifer (Hosta), of Battle Creek, son Joel and his wife Maggie (Josh), and their three children Joslin, Jaden and Addison, all of Sycamore, IL.  She loved her grandchildren immensely, as evidenced by the seemingly endless array of their photos throughout her home, and was proud of their accomplishments in both sports and scholastics.

She is also survived by her older brother, Daniel Greenburg, his wife Judith (Wilson), of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, and their son, Zack O'Malley Greenburg and his wife Danielle La Rocco, of New York, NY.  Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Leah (Rozalsky) Greenburg, of Chicago, IL, Lee's parents, Edwin and Ruth (Morley) Peck, and brother, Frank Peck, all of Battle Creek, MI, and her beloved Labrador Retriever, O.J., and Vizsla, Nico.

Naomi touched so very many lives over the years. Her sudden passing has left a hole in many a heart. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a future date TBA.

Thinking of all of Naomi´s family and very sorry for her passing.
Somewhere in the mid 1960s when I was a young teenager at summer camp, Naomi was my junior counselor and an important and a huge lovely influence on my life. I played guitar and she taught me many beautiful songs. I wanted to be an artist and she encouraged me
( I´ve had a wonderful life as a photographer). I wanted to be like her, because I thought she was special and kind and wonderful. I even visited her at Urbana. We stayed in touch a bit until about 1980. Just today, I just looked for her presence online after reading her brother Dans obituary by coincidence, and wondering about her.
Lee, and her family, I´m so sorry for your loss.

The years have not changed the fact that I miss Naomi. I miss her laugh, her intellect, her passion for life and her kindness to others. She was a bright light in my life.

I was a graduate student with Lee (class of 1997). He and Naomi were a team in everything they did. When it came time to write my MFA Documentary to complete my thesis; Naomi was the most helpful. She made me rewrite the damn thing three times, and today, I am a better writer because of her. My fondest memory though, was the night my wind-shield-wipers malfunctioned during a raging snow storm. Naomi and Lee took me in for the night; my left arm and face frozen from operating the wiper by hand, while driving to their house from NIU. This kindness and generosity was very typical during the few years of my studies at Northern. This note is long over due; and I apologize. I have lost touch over the years, phone numbers have changed, and I would love to talk to you, Lee. You can text me or leave a message please at 847 370 2775. John

Norm and I loved Naomi and we miss her smile, laugh and her stories. We can't believe that five years have passed. Norm and I were just zooming with my sisters on Sunday and we mentioned Naomi. (All my sisters and my Mom knew and loved her.) Norm was remembering his trip to Philadelphia with Naomi for an Art Show. He told us that it was quite an adventure! We send our love to you, Lee - and Jon and Joel and your families. We will remember Naomi forever!

Dear Peck family and Dan & family,

It's with intense sorrow that I write to you right now, an hour after hearing the news of Naomi's passing. I've known Noami ("Na"mostly) since the 6th grade in Chicago. She was my oldest friend and likely the one most dear to me in my life. I moved from Chicago to New York after 9th grade and missed her terribly. We stayed in touch over the years, and I had the joy of spending time with her and Lee when they were in NY for Zack's wedding not too long ago.
I loved her very much.
My deepest condolences to all of you.

Lee, I just heard about Naomi's passing. I'm very sorry for you and your family's great loss as well as the loss to the art world. Not living in the area during most of my schooling kept me from meeting her but a few times but it was well known to me how sweet she was. With respect, Dan

Dear Lee,

Leila and I were devastated by the news, which arrived just as we were making plans for a Midwest tour and a visit to see you and Naomi -- a visit which I hope we will still make.

I am remembering the time we spent together in New York a year ago -- Leila's seeing you and Naomi for the first time in over 40 years, and my meeting you for the first time, after having heard of you both for the past 20.

Leila feels especially sad, losing Naomi so soon after having made contact with her again after all those years. Our thoughts are with you.

Dear Lee and Family,

I have to admit not having been close to Naomi, but I feel a great loss to the world with her death. To me, Naomi was an upbeat, funny and warm person with great talent. She was encouraging and positive. She had a smile to light the world.

My sympathy goes out to you all who loved her and my joy is to say that our paths crossed briefly a few times.

Take time into time. She left a loving legacy. Thanks, Naomi.

Naomi was one of those people who create a warm spot in people's hearts. The pain we feel when they leave us will subside, but the warmth they created will be with us forever. We are so glad to have known her.

June 22, 2015

Writers are supposed to know all the right words at just the right time and I am at a loss to find them through still more tears. This cannot be that someone as fun, as creative, beautiful, a joy to be with, an honor to know, and a fellow barn-loving soul can be gone. Our long telephone talks, secret-keeping, peals of laughter, and shared experiences so enriched my life. The best thing I got from years of belonging to a barn organization was my friendship with Naomi and Lee. My heart absolutely aches.

Lee, Jon & Joel,
Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever. I'm in shock. Naomi and I became friends when Joel and C.J. played little league together in Sycamore. We crossed paths again after you moved. There will be a void forever but time will ease the pain. May God bless you and keep you all.

My sympathy to you Lee and all your family.
This is a great loss for so many.
Naomi was a great friend and loved to see her whenever she returned to the Dekalb and Sycamore area. We had many opportunities for conversations over the years and they evolved around family and stimulating conversations. She was a beautiful person and soul.
May time heal.
God Bless and prayers,
Helen

Oh what a shock to hear of Naomi's passing. I am so sorry the world will not see her sweet smile and spirit. My condolences to the family at this time.

June 21, 2015

Because our parents were best friends, Naomi and I were friends by default. I was 2 years older, which was a big deal, when you are a young teen, I tried to resent her. But she made it difficult. She slept over all the time and became a very special friend. We spent years together at Camp Ramah, and Univ. of Il., and I thought I'd never lose touch with my special friend. But I did, and now, I mourn her loss and the wasted years. Lee, my thoughts are with you, as well as with Joel and Jonathan whom I never met but did hear about years ago when I spoke to your mom. Dan, this must be so hard for you to lose a younger sister. I know how much she admired and loved you. You are all in my thoughts. Shari Futorian Lichtenstein
