Patty and family I am so sorry. I admired and respected "Mr. Newman" so much as a student of his in the late 70s. He was such an excellent teacher and had such an air of sereneness about him. He believed in me and my ability and even though I left Lamar and dropped the pursuit of an art career, he helped me probably more than anyone , to gain self-esteem. I think I always thought I would go back and take instruction from him again. Too late for that I guess but I hear his words in my head anyway every time I do a project. Words about "negative space" and ideas like "you can't ice the cake 'til you bake it" fill my head and they are in his voice. So I suppose I am still receiving instruction from " the teacher". He was great. So sorry Patty.

My heart goes out to Pattee and her family. Jerry and Pattee were both an inspiration to me while I attended Lamar. During the beginning of my second semester, I found myself short of funds for paint. Jerry helped me to get some supplies that enabled me to continue with my art classes. He also hired me to clean his home, and it was an honor to get to watch him work in his studio. Jerry influenced my art, and also encouraged me when I decided to return to Lamar to gain my teaching certification. When my 3 children were toddlers, and I expressed to him how little time I had for artwork, he pointed out that raising my children was the greatest artwork of all. I thank him for the wonderful example he was as a teacher and a mentor. I will miss him.

Jerry always made our Duck Camp a much brighter place when he and his "Hyper-Hunting-Machine" (Dixie) came to our lodge to hunt on many weekends in the 80's. I will remember him as my Good Friend and Hunting Companion. My prayers are now for his family and that they think of his great smile when they are missing him.

Jerry Newman is remembered as one of my favorite professors of art when I was a student at Lamar in the 70s. I remember this tall dignified man as he walked those outside porches of what was then the art department.

The master teacher continues to teach as we remember his words. The insight gained from time spent studying under him has provided a springboard into greater enlightenment and growth that will last a lifetime.

So enjoyed working with Jerry in the
Beaumont Ducks Unlimited and many other outdoors activities Jerry as so active in. He seemed so happy seeing his work generating money to support the outdoors for so many years. One of my earliest memories is of Uncle Jerry letting me "paint" in his studio. Momma was SO mad when she saw my new clothes covered in paint, but I was just thrilled as always to spend time with Uncle Jerry!

It has been our honor to know Jerry from the first interview with him in 1973 as we enrolled at Lamar University. We were fortunate to be among those who through the years were inspired by his great and insightful direction and it was also our honor to be counted among his friends. Although he had students who went on to personal fame, it was the many more that invoked his approach to teaching, to share his philosophy, and inspire a legion of people to excel in their chosen fields. He touched many and the wave continues.
