Emerick Schneck Obituary

Emerick Charles Schneck Designer and Chart-Maker1923-2010 Just three months from his 100th birthday, Emerick C. Schneck, at his home in Ashley Falls, passed away on the morning of November 6, 2010. He was the husband of the late Mary E. Weiser Schneck, a well-known artist and educator in the Berkshires. He is survived by his two daughters, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was cared for by Patricia Blumhagen. Mr. Schneck was born on February 6, 1911, in Budapest, Hungary, and joined family in New York City in 1923. As a young man he pursued a career in textile design, ultimately opening his own studio in New York City with his wife, Mary. They relocated to the southern Berkshires in 1950 with their daughters. To show and sell Mary's prize-winning floral oil paintings, the family created the Golden Bough Gallery, by converting a post-and-beam barn. They added a first extension for a small coffee shop and then created a larger bistro, the Whistle Stop, frequented by Tanglewood devotees. This was entirely a family-built business. As the economy shifted and Route 7 was re-routed, Mr. Schneck pursued a career as an industrial designer for Auto Vac of Bridgeport, Ct, and then joined Sun Chief Electric Co, Winsted CT, as chief electrical engineer-designer, retiring in 1981. He was not restricted to textile design; as a Renaissance man, he was extraordinarily well-read and mastered many fields of endeavor. During WWII, for instance, he designed packaging at Sperry-Gyroscope. In recent decades he wrote and lectured on the subject of social and technical language in modern society. With the assistance of his family he authored and published two books, Instant Energy Charts and Energy-Control-Satisfaction. He will be missed by his daughters, Elizabeth Schneck Palter of Providence, R.I., and Deborah Schneck DePippo of Concord, N.H. His grandchildren are Lisa A. Palter- DeShazo, William E. DePippo and John A. DePippo. His great-grandchildren are Olivia Louise DeShazo and Zachary Weiser DeShazo. Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington, MA is caring for the arrangements. My Father was Bartholomew F. Johnson who was an executive working closely with Emerick at Sun Chief Electrics in Winsted, CT. My dad was Quality Engineer, Director of Purchasing etc working for the firm for some 28 years.
Circa 1971, I reaching 16 years old, started working part time at Sun Chief. I was paid minimum wage and assigned duties in the "Press Room'" where skilled employees controlled massive machines that stamped out and formed the components of toasters, waffle irons, ovens and irons for clothing. I however was "found a job," collecting scrap metal off the floor, which never ceased to stop, I would pick it ALL up and place in bins for resale to scrap yards, perhaps asked to paint a wall. Tedious, torturous, repetitive, labor that was assigned to executive's children so we would see the importance of Continuing Higher Education. Well, no one really kept tabs on me since there was nothing that I really was contributing to or detracting from.....So, I would sneak away from the press room, skirting by any management of note to the Engineering office where Emerick could be found. We enjoyed each other immensely. He recognized that I was fascinated with his Energy charts, and he explained them ALL to me. Yes I was interested, however it was Emerick himself that captivated me. We would discuss, which means Emerick holding court on all aspects of with me sitting fascinated. Always Art, Art conservation, European history. Humanity. "The veil that one must place over what is depicted.....WOW. My mother was a Hungarian Magyar, I am 1/4 Hungarian. Emerick frequently visited my Mom and Dad. He adored my Mother and had a bond with my Father. He designed the layout for the wood-burning stoves that my dad at one time constructed in our own factory. My dad returned some favor in kind. I have lived half my life in Stockbridge and Great Barrington, Emerick visited me monthly....often weekly. I have also lived in 17 European Countries...including Budapest. Emerick was the first eccentric imbued with an original mind that I recognized as different, intelligent in a way that others are not, and possibly having a Holy Aspect that he was not aware of.
With that last statement, I need not say more.

Dear Family, Friends, and Neighbors,

We thank you for your kindnesses to our aging father -- known to us as Dad, Uncle Em, Grand Dad, and Great Grand Dad. He lived a long life, just shy of 100 years, not always an easy life. We remember Dad in a myriad of ways - for his insightful monologues at the kitchen table, for helping him plant hundreds of trees - maples, white pines, willows, and Chinese elms - at a time when few would be "green." We remember him for engaging us in a construction project that manifested itself in an art gallery and coffee shop. We remember him for his creativity in the field of art and design - for instance, painting a huge mural of New England scenes on the high walls of Dankin's Department Store in Canaan, CT, when he endured the lifelong pain of a broken back. We remember him for his devotion to our mother, Mary, in a marriage of 53 years. May he now rest in peace and enjoy the vibrational universe that he evoked so many times.

Loving thoughts,
Daughter Elizabeth Schneck Palter

To All of Emerick's family and Patricia,

I had the privilege of meeting with Emerick and discussing many topics since I am an engineer by profession but a seeker of all knowledge and Emerick certainly had a great gift of mind.

Thank you, Patricia, for getting us together and we enjoyed seeing the floral painting and others of Mary in his barn. She too was gifted from what I saw.

He will be missed.
With sympathy,

Dear Liz and Debbie,

I am so sorry for your loss. I will also miss you're dad immensely. We shared many fond memories mostly him reminiscing about you (the family). And a bit of cynicism at times. I loved your dad dearly. Miss you Emerick, anxiously awaiting for you to visit me in spirit.

Love Louise

Dear Dad,
Your creative and wildly brilliant mind will be missed so much. Your contributions in the field of linguistics will some day be recognized. I know you had a difficult time telling us, but your daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all know how much you loved us. Love, Debbie

Hi Elizabeth and Debbie
I am sorry for your loss but what a long life he had. Reading it took me back to our town of Ashley Falls and Mt. Everett. I hope you are well.
Fondly
