Dear Deb and family. I was very shocked and saddened to randomly hear of Jeff's passing when I was looking at the recent gallery show post on FB and noticed the word "legacy". I wish I had known at the time -I would have attended a memorial or funeral if there was one held. Though we have sort of lost contact the last few years, I remember our youthful friendship well and treasure the memories. I hope that it has gotten a little easier for all of you since some time has passed. I always loved the energy, movement and color in Jeff's work. Much love and sympathy to all of you. Christine

Dear Debbie and Jeff's children,
Jeffrey was a wonderful South Ender whom I have known
for so many years....a wonderful artist and person.
He and Sarah Hutt organized a great big show in the Cyclorama
called Heroes and Heroines in the 90's which was fresh and
inventive, and he continued to conjure up pop ups which
surprised refreshed us. He was a lovely person whose
spirit inspired. So sorry for your very personal loss and sorry, too,
for the loss to the Boston art community. Ellen Rich

Dear Debbie and Family,

Jeff was the real deal as an artist. He really put everything into his art. For that he'll continue to inspire me in my own work.
I wish I had known him better.

So very sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.

Jeff had a great spirit. At Kansas City Art Institute he showed up as one of the most original artist with a very unique sense of self. Impossible to forget the positive emotional atmosphere he created.Richard Pitts

I am sorry to hear this. Jeffrey and I were in art school together and shared many days and nights working in Niewald's studio. He was probably the hardest worker I've ever known in that regard. He was tenacious to a point of exhaustion in his work, always experimenting and reworking things. His energy was non stop. May his legacy live on. My deepest condolences. Rob Jessel

Jeff had a wonderful spirit and focus. I first saw his work in 1978 and loved the energy and color of his paintings and visiting his studio. I own two of his paintings and showed his paintings in San Francisco at my gallery in the mid 1980s. One huge six part drawing, Wheel of Doom, is one of my favorite pieces because it encompasses Jeff's incredible drawing skills, his sense of humor and expansive view of what art can do.

Sending my warmest thoughts to Debby and his children. This is very sad news indeed. A real loss. What a guy.
