Kenneth Hosterman Obituary

Kenneth Frederick Hosterman November 22, 1924 -April 7, 2005 Kenneth Frederick Hosterman, 80, of State College, died Thursday April 7, 2005 at The Terrace at Brookline. Born November 22, 1924 in State College, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary Gearhart Hosterman. On June 29, 1946, he married Wilda "Billie" Elder, who survives at home. He was graduated from State College Area High School in 1942. He received a Bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State College in 1950 and a Master's degree also from Pennsylvania State College in 1954. He was a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II where he flew 35 missions as a navigator on B-24 bombers. He received the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. While at preflight school he won the prestigious best athlete award in the navigator's division. He was an Assistant Professor of Physical Education at Penn State University from 1950 to 1989. He was the Varsity Men's Soccer Coach from 1953 to 1967, where he won 2 National Championships in 1954 and 1955. He was named "Soccer Coach of the Year" in 1954 by the National Soccer Coaches Association. He also served as the Penn State Ticket Manager from 1972 to 1976. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, State College V.F.W., Life Member of the State College Area High School Alumni Association, Penn State University Alumni Association and the Nittany Lion Club. He was a PIAA soccer official and a member of the National Soccer Officials Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by 4 daughters; Diane Daly Patti and her husband Tom of Norway, Maine, Donna Waldhausen of Seattle, Washington, Kathy Bartoo and her husband Ron of Arlington, Texas, Karen Hosterman of West Lafayette, Indiana, 1 son; Karl Hosterman and his wife Linda of State College, 1 sister; Madeline Myers of Vestal, New York, 2 brothers; Ralph Hosterman and his wife Alma of State College, Walter Hosterman, Jr. and his wife Gladys "Tommi" of Naples, Florida, 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother; Woodrow Hosterman of Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Visitation will be from 6 PM to 9 PM on Sunday April 10 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton St., State College. The Funeral Service will be at 1 PM on Monday April 11 at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert M.A.L. Miller and Rev. P. Stevens Lynn officiating. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner St., State College, PA 16801 or to the Penn State University Men's Soccer Team, c/o Hosterman Men's Soccer Fund, 103 Bryce Jordan Center, University Park, PA 16802.

Billie & family:

I am so sorry for your loss. I just read the obituary for Ken and was so very shocked. I hope you are doing ok, I miss you and have thought of you often since leaving Alterra/ Brookline. My thoughts and prayers are with you and I wish you well.

Mrs. Hosterman, Karen, and family,

I was very sorry to learn of Mr. Hosterman's passing but am thankful along with you that his suffering is now over and he is singing with the angels for our heavenly Father.
