Lisa Stewart Obituary

Dr. Lisa R. Stewart SAVANNAH, GA - Lisa Renee Stewart, M.D., of Savannah, Georgia, passed away in her home on April 27, 2015. Beloved daughter of Robert Hugh and Barbara Ann Stewart, Lisa was born in Lewiston, New York on March 26, 1970, and grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her formative years were spent attending Northrop High School in Fort Wayne, where her passion was cheerleading. At the age of seventeen, she traded in her pom poms for chemistry books when she left home to attend Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. After graduating with a degree in chemistry in 1992, she worked for a year as a medical researcher at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, before attending medical school. Lisa earned her doctorate in medicine from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey, in 1997. Lisa completed her residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina in 2002. The same year she joined Coastal Carolina Nephrology, LLC where she was a partner until 2010. From 2003 to 2010, Lisa also served as the medical director of Renal Advantage, Inc., a dialysis center. Lisa moved to Savannah in 2010 and joined the Medical Associates of Savannah, P.C. as a nephrologist, caring for patients in the Savannah and Bluffton, South Carolina offices. She also served as the medical director of Pruitt Health Hospice, formerly known as United Hospice, in Savannah. During her career, she published and presented several articles in various medical journals and was an invited speaker for many nephrology organizations, including the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA). Lisa also volunteered with the South Carolina National Kidney Foundation, Kidneys for Life, and Kidney Early Evaluation Program. As demonstrated by her mentorship of medical students and volunteer work with Trident Technical College, she was committed to the advancement and support of women in the medical profession. Lisa was the best friend and beloved wife of John ("Jay") Parrott Whittle, Jr., M.D. Lisa and Jay were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Emily StewartWhittle in 2010. Notwithstanding all of her academic and professional accomplishments, Lisa was most proud of her daughter and cherished Emily and her family above all else. Lisa will be remembered for her clever and laugh-at-life sense of humor, devotion to her family and friends, quest for self-improvement, and compassion and commitment to her patients. Lisa loved to travel and explore other cultures, day-dreamed of becoming an interior designer, and joked that she wanted to someday retire to the Cotswolds, wear comfortable shoes, and solve mysteries. In addition to her husband and daughter, Lisa is survived by her loving parents, Robert Hugh and Barbara Ann Stewart of Bluffton, SC, and devoted siblings, Amy Christine Stewart of Medford, MA, and Susan Lynn Stewart of Canton, MA. She also leaves her nephews, nieces, and many friends, all of whom she loved very much. The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 o'clock Tuesday, May 5th, at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, May 6th, at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension conducted by Pastor Carl R. Yost and The Reverend William H. Roen. Information as to the family's preferred charity for memorial contributions will be posted shortly at www.gamblefuneralservice.com. I have just learned that Dr. Stewart has passed away. I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Stewart was an awesome person. She always made me laugh when I came to see her for my semi-annual kidney stone/function appts. She will be greatly missed. May she soar in the sky and look down on the family she loved with all her heart.

I never met Lisa but we spoke a lot on the phone working on a book chapter earlier this year. She had such a beautiful voice and I thought she was so kind and knowledgeable. I was looking forward to meeting Lisa in person one day. I am very saddened to just have learned this news today that I won't get a chance to meet her but now that I see her picture and read her obituary, I realize what an honor it would have been to get to know her in person. I send prayers for her daughter, spouse, sisters, and parents. I am sure Lisa touched the lives of many people.

I too was very saddened to hear of Lisa's passing.

Both you and Lisa allowed me to play a small part in Emily's early years as her Nanny (OME) She would contact me twice a year to donate some of Emily's clothing for the children in the Safe Shelter. Lisa was always willing to help others who were in need.

I will miss you so very much....but I know you are looking down from heaven and encouraging us to celebrate her life and the time we had with her.

Jay, Edgar and I received this news with extreme sadness. Our prayers and supplications are offered for peace and comfort to your family and Lisa's.

-To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.

To the family of Dr. Lisa Stewart:

Words cannot express how sad I am right now! I leaned of Dr. Stewart's passing today. My mother, Wilhelmina Chalmers, was her patient. My mother and I adored her. She was caring, kind and courteous. Since Dr. Stewart has been on medical leave, my mother constantly talks about how she would be so happy to see Dr. Stewart return to the office! When my mother was referred to Dr. Stewart, we found an angel ~ now heaven has gained another angel!!!! Stewart and Whittle family, during this difficult moment, our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find comfort in the fond memories of Dr. Stewart. She will be sadly missed!

Our deepest condolences,
Wilhelmina W. Chalmers, patient

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Lisa's passing. She was my neighbor in the late 90's out on Sullivan's Island and she was in my wedding in 2000. I lost my husband 2 years later and we had a 13 month old daughter at the time. My heart goes out to her husband and her daughter, I wish I could say something to take away the pain,it just takes time. Lisa was one of the most caring and thoughtful people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I have so many great memories of her out on Sullivan's Island. We never understand why our loved ones are taken so early, but they were placed on this earth for a purpose greater than ours.

I remember the first time I met you Dr. Stewart. Starting my career in medical sales I was so nervous for our meeting. You were so incredibly nice and patient with me as I stumbled through my words. You ended up placing the order with me then a couple of weeks later I received a thank you note from you, thanking me for all of my help. I was amazed by you and your thoughtfulness. Your kindness stood out to me so much so that about 10 years later, I remember that first encounter. You made me feel like a success even though I'm quite sure I was a disaster. You helped me build my confidence and made me think, I can do this. 10 years later I'm still doing it. I pray for your family because I know the loss of such an amazing woman won't be easy. May you rest in peace.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of a beautiful person. Lisa welcomed me with open arms during my time in Savannah. She was kind and caring. She was many things to me: a mentor, a friend, an older sister. She took care of me in times of need. She had a huge heart which will live on with Emily.

My prayers go out to Jay, Emily and the rest of the family. May the light shine bright on you all again, very soon.

And Lisa... I will miss you dearly.

Dr. Whittle,
You have been in my prayers! I trust that you find comfort in knowing that there are people who you can lean and count upon. There will be some dark days ahead, BUT joy comes in the morning - not our morning - GOD'S morning. Keep the faith. Ecclesiastes 3. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to diet.......... A time to weep, and a time to mourn, and a time to dance. Keep the faith!

My heart breaks for the family of this awesome Dr. and incredible Woman. May the Lord lift you up and be aware of the skills, kindness and knowledge that she possessed. Her first words of comfort to me were " I will give the best care that I can provide". She said this to me as she wiped away the tears of a terrified 72 year old woman. May God Bless you and that precious Daughter.
